Buquebus

Buquebus connect Argentina with Uruguay sailing between the ports of Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento.

Founded in 1982 by Juan Carlos López Mena under the name of Ríos Argentinos, Buquebus rapidly expanded and became the main transportation company in the River Plate region.

Buquebus own a fleet of ten vessels and offer several daily departures all year round. Their services are maximised during the peak season to respond to the high demand of Argentinian nationals and a growing number of tourists looking for a bit of tranquillity in Uruguay and Southern Brazil.

With their last fast ferry, named in tribute to the Argentinian Pope Francisco, Buquebus offer luxurious amenities such as bars, VIP areas and with a 1,100 square metre duty-free shop you are sure to be entertained during your crossing.

Built in Australia in 2010 and launched late 2013, Francisco can carry up to 1024 passengers and 150 cars at a maximum speed of 107 km/h. Francisco is one of the fastest ferries of the world and will speed you across the Rio de la Plata estuary in only 2 hours! In addition, Francisco is fuelled with liquefied natural gas making it a very modern construction in the ferry industry.

To bring the best service to their passengers, Buquebus also provide coach transfers to and from the city resorts of Punta del Este and Piriapolis. So avoid the hassle of flying, Buquebus and their ‘Concorde of the Sea’ are the best way to link Argentina with Uruguay!

With directferries.co.uk you can find Buquebus timetables, fares and book Buquebus ferry tickets. Where applicable we’ll also compare Buquebus with alternative ferry companies.

  • "Perfect Way to cross the River Plate"

Really enjoyed the crossing from Montevideo to Buenos Aires, relaxing and a different way to get from A to B. I have no hesitancy in recommending the high speed ferry. Just one word of warning. When you get into Buenos Aires, make sure you're off the ferry as quickly as you can or you will spend an eternity at the immigration check point which certainly isn't as efficient as Buqubus. Two and three quarter hours to cross, and an hour and a half to clear immigration!

  • "Problems"

The trip from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento on Buquebus had ticketing issues. I arrived to find the ticket I had requested which direct ferries sent me an email confirming was not the ticket allocated to me. The ticket I had was for the reverse sailing at 10am from Colonia. Buquebus staff were helpful in the sense of passing me from check-in to info desk to ticketing as they identified the problem but I had to buy another ticket to travel. Direct ferries are taking their time reverting to me to refund. Once I got on the boat it was all fine.
