How to get around Mykonos

The streets in Mykonos Town are pedestrian-only so it’s best exploring the town by foot. There are also regular buses connecting the town with the port and the island’s beaches. Renting a scooter, quad or a car is a great way to explore Mykonos. It means you don't need to rely on the island's public transport and you can explore more of the island. You'll find plenty of rental services in and around the town.

About Mykonos port

There are two ports in Mykonos. The New Port, which is the main ferry port, is located in Tourlos around 2km north of Mykonos Town. The port serves high-speed and local ferries to both the Cyclades and mainland Greece. The Old Port is located in Mykonos Town and tends to be used for small boats and private yachts.

How to get to Mykonos port

From Mykonos Town:

  • Taxi: taxis usually take around 10 minutes depending on traffic
  • Sea bus: You can get a sea bus to the New Port (Tourlos) which takes approximately 8 minutes
  • Bus: Buses are available from Mykonos Fabrika Square to the New Port. The journey takes about 30 minutes

From Mykonos Airport:

  • Taxi: Taxis from the airport to the port usually take around 11 minutes
  • Bus: There are direct buses available from the airport taking about 20-25 minutes depending on traffic

Rafina is a charming port town situated not far from Athens on the eastern coast of Attica. It’s mainly known for its port, with many visitors simply passing through on their way to the Cyclades Islands. However, if you’ve got the time then it’s definitely worth spending a day or so exploring this gem with its vibrant waterfront, amazing culinary scene and beautiful views.

About Rafina port

Rafina port is located around 18 miles from Athens city centre. Despite not being as popular as the port of Piraeus, Rafina is actually located closer to some of the Cyclades Islands so ferries from here can be quicker depending on your route. They also tend to be cheaper too. The ferry port isn’t as busy as Piraeus, but it can still get extremely busy in the summer months. 

Ferries from Rafina mainly sail to the Cyclades Islands such as Santorini and Mykonos, with regular services operated by companies including SeaJets, Golden Star Ferries and Cyclades Fast Ferries.

How to get to Rafina port

From Athens:

  • By car: Head east towards Attiki Odos (A6) and follow signs for “Rafina / Markopoulo”. Taje the exit to Rafina. Continue on Leoforos Rafinas Avenue until you reach the ferry port.
  • By bus: KTEL operate a bus service from Athens city centre to Rafina. The journey takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • By taxi: You can get a taxi from Athens city centre to Rafina ferry port in around 1 hour. Bear in mind that taxis can be expensive.

From the airport:

  • By car: it takes around 30 minutes to drive to the port from the airport.
  • By bus: KTEL operate bus services between the airport and Rafina port. The journey also takes about half an hour.
  • By taxi: there are plenty of taxis available at the airport, although this is a more expensive way of reaching the port.
