Translated as ‘good water’ the title of the city is aptly named with its abundance of surrounding water, a catalyst for the exponential growth of the thriving maritime industry. The fishing potential brings many to the city, and the gorgeous scenery and picturesque walking trails keep visitors in the peaceful haven for a little while longer. The pinnacle of the outdoor beauty is Odongdo Island, or as it’s known unofficially, The Island of Love, which showcases the natural beauty with the plethora of enigmatic crevices, imposing cliffs and colourful foliage. The city may ooze natural beauty, yet the architecture and infrastructure is strikingly impressive; Jinnamgwan Wall is the oldest standing wooden building in Korea with a rich history, proving to be a pivotal part of the country’s naval history. Alongside the towering buildings, there are plenty of cultural sights dotted around the city, including the Jeollanam-do Maritime and Fisheries Science Museum, a pleasant setting for a slow paced afternoon.
The city is hindered by constant traffic, so the best way to traverse the city is on two feet, though there is a bus system in operation if you want to save your energy.
