Whilst looking out over the harbour, admiring the breathtaking mountainside that encompasses the water, you realise Volos’s landscape is arguably the most beautiful in the entirety of Greece. The verdant scenery adorning the undulating hills and mountains is the perfect setting to admire as you slowly sip on a sumptuous cocktail, or indulge yourself in some quintessential Greek cuisine. After perusing the copious cafes and restaurants, head to the pinnacle of Volos – the gorgeous beaches. A number of landmarks direct a leisurely stroll along the golden sands and crystal blue waters of the coastline, beginning at the sculpture of Argo and ending at the Papastratou building that dominates the skyline. Much like the beautiful shores, the city centre of Volos is drenched in historical architecture, symbolised by the hugely impressive Volos Castle that represents the city’s maritime tradition. A wealth of notable landmarks are dotted about the city, but for something a little off the beaten track, the railway station is a hidden gem, and to gain an insight into the history of Volos, the archaeological museum hosts a fascinating number of ancient artefacts.
In terms of public transport, Volos has an efficient bus system in operation around the inner city. For independent travel, taxis are readily available or if you’re fit enough, the city centre and waterfront is flat enough to make cycling a viable mode of transport.
