Nature lovers and hikers besiege Rangitoto all year round; the walking trails dominate the island and after embarking on the challenging walks it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Breathtaking views are on display from every peak and the unique foliage and greenery that decorates the trail distracts from the uphill trek. Myriad of rock formations, hills and mountains are ideal for hiking, yet oftentimes many flock to Rangitoto purely for Pohutukawa Forest – the world’s largest forest. The plant life omits a tropical feel that is atypical of the landscape associated with New Zealand, offering endless stretches of exotic land. Most travel to Rangitoto for only a day trip, usually residents of Auckland that long for an escape from the stresses of day to day city life. The island may exude a peaceful atmosphere, yet the activities on offer don’t adhere to a tranquil vacation; skydiving, bungee jumping and zip lining are hugely popular with the adrenaline junkies, and for the less adventurous, caving and rafting are perfect ways to spend an afternoon.
Public and private transport is plentiful for visitors; rail and bus travel is a common way to get around the island, and water taxis are popular in the spring and summer. For quicker and more convenient transport, rental cars and motorcycles are available at affordable prices.
