On the south coast of the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands lies the small town of Playa Santiago, also known as Playa de Santiago.
Playa Santiago used to be the busiest centre on the island with factories, a shipyard and a port exporting local bananas and tomatoes until the 1960s when the town was hit by a farming crisis.
However, tourism has bought new life to the town in the recent years. Situated in the sunniest area of La Gomera, Playa Santiago is now one of the most important tourist spots on the island. Its town centre is home to the outstanding parish church of Salvador del Mundo which contains a Christ from the 17th century and the hermitage of San Lorenzo.
