Motuihe Guide

Motuihe Ferry Port

Located just 16 kilometres from Auckland, Motuihe Island rests just off the north west coast of New Zealand. There is only one crossing per week departing from the port, a 30 minute crossing every Sunday to Auckland, providing the connection to the New Zealand mainland. With a general lack of attractions, Motuihe Island relies purely on its wonderful landscape and lush greenery to entice tourists to the secluded beaches and challenging walking trails. Most visitors only stay for a maximum of three of four days, using the island as a convenient way to escape the relative busyness of Auckland city centre. Whilst there, the white sand beaches are a must visit, especially in the summer months when it’s ideal to top up a tan next to the crystal clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. The large parks and intriguing walking trails prove too appealing for many who love to spend a few nights camping. The walks are particularly desirable for anyone who loves hiking, some of the trails on the outline of the island lead to interesting relics, revealing part of the island’s Maori history. The island is now generally entirely inhabited by tourism focused companies, though there are still Maori influences embedded in the culture. The island is tiny and can be covered entirely by foot, which is the preferable option considering the beautiful aesthetics of Motuihe.
