Situated on the west coast of Algeria, Mostaganem is a port city and lies on the Gulf of Arzew, bordering the Mediterranean Sea. The port is regarded as the gateway to Spain; a weekly crossing to Alicante lasts approximately 11 hours, and the crossing to Valencia is around the same duration, though runs four times per week. Mostaganem is famous for the religious element that embodies the city; the most prestigious buildings are the Bai Bofalgm shrine and the Tabanh Mosque, which are typically at the top of the itinerary for most tourists. Even visitors who don’t have an active interest in architecture or culture should pay a visit to the beautiful landmarks. Other than the religious buildings, the lighthouse is one of the major attractions in the city. It sits at the top of a fairly steep hill, making the visit more satisfying after embarking on a brisk walk to get there. The locals are generally friendly and welcoming to tourists, though visitors from western countries should be advised to adhere to the local dress code whilst walking through the streets. The city of Mostaganem is fairly small, so it is possible to walk across the city centre by foot. Alternatively, there are taxis readily available, though it is worthwhile negotiating a price before entry.
