Kalundborg Guide

Located on the north west coast of the island of Zealand, the Danish town of Kalundborg is around 110 km from Copenhagen and is famous for its large broadcasting transmitter and is also home to Denmark's largest coal fire power station. There is evidence in the town of its fortified medieval past, and although no longer there the boundaries can still be recognised. Taking a stroll through the town you will see some fine examples of 16th century buildings. A popular attraction in the town is the beautiful five spired Church of Our Lady which is associated with King Valdemar I and Archbishop Absalon. The city's walls can be found beneath the church, to the north and west. There is also Kalundborg Castle which was reputedly built by King Valdemar Atterdag, and is where kings and noblemen gathered to conduct political negotiations during the 14th and 15th centuries. In times of war, Kalundborg was a military support point of central importance. Kalundborg has Denmark's largest deep water harbour and a ferry service to Denmark's second largest city Arhus and the island of Samso.
