Freeport Guide

Freeport Ferry Port

Found within the crescent-shaped western quarter of Grand Bahama, the northernmost island in the Bahamas archipelago, is the city of Freeport. Since being founded in 1955 amid the mangrove swamps and scrubland that dwarfed the landscape, Freeport has blossomed into the country’s second-largest district and cultivated a reputation as a centre for international trade in a prime location near the coast of Florida. But Freeport is far more than just a convenient stop-over for cargo ships. Despite the city’s meteoric rise from spot in the wilderness to thriving industrial hub, it has managed to retain much of its flawless tropical beauty. Broad-leafed palms border most of the downtown streets while the district of Port Lucaya, found along the city’s sweeping southern coast, is built around a labyrinthine patchwork of tiny peninsulas that jut out into the waterways flowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The harbour in Freeport is found to the west of town along a narrow inlet of the sea known as Hawksbill Creek. The ferry terminal here is nestled between the piers of a bustling commercial shipyard found at the far end of the inlet. There are no facilities at the port, it consisting solely of a small pier for passengers to embark and alight from the arriving ferries. There are plenty of transport links to and from the port. The Grand Bahama International Airport is a short 10-minute drive away along Queen’s Highway and a number of nearby buses offer routes to the major sights across the city, including the idyllic Garden of the Groves that brims with luxuriant local plant-life. Two ferry services currently offer routes from Freeport throughout the week. A Bahamas Express line sails the short distance across the North Atlantic to the city of Fort Lauderdale on the eastern-coast of Florida, while a Bahamas Ferries service makes the longer voyage south to the Bahaman capital of Nassau.
