Skopelos is the perfect destination for an authentic Greek getaway. The Sporades Island is bursting with natural beauty, from lush, forested hills dotted with hiking trails to idyllic coves with clear turquoise waters. It’s that beautiful in fact, that it was chosen as one of the filming locations for Mamma Mia. The capital and main port of Chora is where most of the action happens. Although only small, it’s a charming place with bright bougainvillea draped across whitewashed walls, traditional tavernas lining cobblestone alleys and stylish bars spilling out onto the waterfront.
You can easily explore the capital town of Chora on foot. If you want to explore the island fully though, especially those harder to reach areas, we’d recommend renting a scooter, quad or a car. The island also has buses connecting Chora with popular beaches and other villages such as Glossa. Bear in mind that buses can be infrequent, especially out of season. Taxis are also available on the island, although they can be very expensive.
There are 3 ports on the island; Chora, Glossa and Agnontas. Located in the capital on the east coast of the island, Chora is the main port. Part of the National Marine Park and home to the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, Alonissos is a paradise for snorkellers and scuba divers.
There are buses connecting Patitiri with Chora and the main beaches. Buses are cheap so are a great option if you're on a budget. For more freedom, we’d recommend renting a car, scooter or a quad so you can explore the island fully.
