The beach resort of Cavo marks the north-eastern point of the Island of Elba, just a short distance from the Italian mainland across a narrow channel of the Ligurian Sea. This quaint port village is surrounded on all sides by steep hills studded with a motley green variety of flora, from Ilex trees to Gariga shrubs. The port of Cavo consists of a short pier that juts out from one side of a busy marina. Motorists and cyclists can board the ferries via one of the designated lanes that lead to the docking area at the tip of the pier. There are very few amenities at the port, though there is a bar with outdoor seating for waiting passengers to relax before departure. There are only two road routes that feed into Cavo. The SP26 is a short jaunt along the eastern coast, connecting the resort to the larger port town of Rio Marina, while the SP33 is a twisting hillside route leading towards the island’s largest city of Portoferraio. There are plenty of ferries that leave Cavo throughout the week. The port of Piombino on the Italian mainland, just 20 minutes across the sea, is the most serviced destination with daily departures on Moby Lines and Toremar ferries, but a daily Toremar service also takes passengers around the northern tip of Elba into Portoferraio too.
